When the Wounds Are Invisible: How Domestic Violence Impacts Mental Health

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to bring attention to the impact of domestic violence on both physical and mental health. Across the world, millions experience domestic violence in different forms. It’s never an easy topic to discuss. Some individuals have tragically lost their lives, while others have survived and found the strength to share their stories; stories that have inspired healing and hope for others.

At Macon Mental Health Matters, we value the importance of understanding how life experiences and circumstances can shape mental well-being. Domestic violence doesn’t just leave physical scars, it often leaves emotional ones that take years to heal. Survivors may experience post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, or feelings of isolation that affect their ability to trust and connect.

Our mission is to provide safe spaces like the Healing Hub and Teranga House, where community members can access understanding, support, and pathways to recovery. Healing begins with acknowledgment, compassion, and the reminder that no one should have to face trauma alone.

As we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let’s commit to empathy and action. Together, we can create a community where survivors are seen, supported, and empowered to heal. 💜 If you or someone you know is in danger, please reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or visit thehotline.org.
